Venus Williams startled the crowd when she cried out in agony and clutched her leg at the beginning of her Wimbledon first-round match against Elina Svitolina. The legendary American tennis player is competing in just her second Grand Slam in the previous eight majors.

She’s been suffering from some fitness difficulties and was photographed on the practice courts in the run-up to Wimbledon with heavy strapping around her right leg. Williams’ strapping was still there as she walked onto Centre Court for her match against Svitolina. However, she appeared to be unaffected as the legendary American tennis player broke her opponent early on in the game.

Venus Williams, though, fell to the ground in a horrific moment during the third game and shouted aloud in excruciating pain. When the 43-year-old appeared to lose her balance and stumble before collapsing to the ground in excruciating pain, she was reaching out for a volley at the net. Williams screamed in pain and grasped at her bandaged leg. The umpire then came down to help the five-time Wimbledon winner, who needed time to gather herself.

However, when she skipped 2022, many people thought her time in SW19 was over. After defeating world No. 48 Camila Giorgi in Birmingham during a Wimbledon warm-up competition, she was given a wildcard entrance and later said in interviews leading up to the event that she could play until she was 50.

Venus attempted to resume play after a brief break, but she was clearly in discomfort as she groaned during the following several games. She went on to lose three straight games, raising doubts about her ability to continue, before rallying to pull it back to 4-3.

From that point on, however, Svitolina had an easy time of it, winning 6-4, 6-3 in just one hour and 32 minutes to finish the match in straight sets. The Ukrainian will next face either No. 28 seed Elise Mertens or Viktoria Hruncakova in the second round. Like Williams, the Ukrainian entered the tournament as a wildcard.

But there were encouraging signals when Williams was able to stand up on her own. The American then escorted the trainer to her chair, unsure whether she would continue Venus Williams, meanwhile, will take a break from the competition while she prepares to maybe compete in the US Open, which gets underway in New York City next month. Venus has 24 career appearances in the Wimbledon singles competition and has won five titles.
