Following his triumph in the Swedish Open on Sunday, July 23, Andrey Rublev had a wild night. The Bastad Open, an ATP Tour 250 competition hosted in the town of Bastad, Sweden, was won with ease by world No. 7 Rublev in the final. He had earlier defeated fifth-seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets as the tournament’s second-seeded player before overcoming fourth-seed Francisco Cerundolo in the semi-final match.
Rublev had to defeat some formidable rivals to claim the Swedish Open title. In the opening round of his campaign, he defeated Pavel Kotov in straight sets. In the quarterfinals, he defeated German Alexander Zverev in another straight set. He faced Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina in the semifinals, who forced him to a tie-break in the first two sets before losing 6-7(6-8), 7-6(9-7), 3-6.
The world No. 4 and top-seeded player Casper Ruud was his opponent in the championship match, but Rublev easily overcame the Norwegian, winning 7-6 (3), 6-0. As a result, the Russian was able to win his 14th title of his career. With this triumph, Rublev now has two victories this year on clay. His first victory came in the Monte-Carlo Masters in April when he defeated Holger Rune of Denmark in the championship match. In addition, he made it to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time and advanced to the second round of the Australian Open before losing to seven-time SW19 winner Novak Djokovic.
Andrey Rublev was seen doing pullups in a video posted on Twitter
Rublev went to a bar to celebrate his victory after the event and appeared to be having a good time. The 25-year-old was seen performing pull-ups from the nightclub’s raised beam structure while Queen’s iconic song ‘We Are The Champions’ played throughout the building, according to a video uploaded on Twitter.
The video of Rublev’s wild celebration was posted on Twitter on Monday, July 24. “Andrey Rublev in Bastad last night ???? If you’re not celebrating doing pull-ups off the nightclub’s elevated beam structure while ‘We Are The Champions’ plays in the background, did you really win the event?” the tweet was captioned.
On July 26, Andrey Rublev, who just won the Swedish Open, will play Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the opening round of the German Open. In Hamburg, the second-seeded Russian will be vying for his 15th career victory and third clay-court championship of the year. The 54th-ranked Miralles is coming off a strong performance in Bastad, where he advanced to the second round before falling to Sebastian Ofner in three sets. The 26-year-old Spaniard recently competed at Wimbledon for the third time, when he was defeated in five sets by Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Andrey Rublev and Miralles will be facing off for the first time on the ATP Tour. Given his better ranking, background, and current form, Rublev is the undisputed favorite to win. Miralles, who excels on clay courts, can present some challenges for the Russian with his aggressive baseline style and strong serving, though.
