Federer has welcomed a new chapter in his life after retiring from professional tennis at the 2022 Laver Cup. His attendance at this year’s event demonstrates his tight ties with Wimbledon and his willingness to communicate with fans. Mats Wilander lauded Roger Federer’s influence at Wimbledon, he stated,
“Here at Wimbledon this is where he made his mark, I think he took Wimbledon to the next level with the way he played on the court and the ambassador he is.You know I don’t like the saying who is the GOAT, because greatest of all time is one thing, but the ‘best of all time’ we will give to Novak Djokovic these days. The ‘greatest of all time’ I like to give to Roger Federer because I think he put tennis in everyone’s TV set.”
Federer won Wimbledon for the first time in 2003, defeating Andy Roddick in the semi-finals and Mark Philippoussis in the final. He played in numerous memorable finals, including one against Rafael Nadal in 2008, which is widely considered to be one of the finest Grand Slam finals ever. Federer’s most recent Wimbledon final appearance came in 2019 when he lost to Novak Djokovic despite having two title points.
Federer was joined by his wife Mirka in the Royal Box on Centre Court. He also sat next to the Princess of Wales, who had previously seen British No. 1 Katie Boulter play Daria Saville in her first-round match on Court 18. Elena Rybakina, the defending women’s champion, faced Shelby Rogers first on Centre Court today. Defending champion rebounded from a shaky start to beat American Shelby Rogers in the first round at Wimbledon.
