On Friday, July 14, Daniil Medvedev fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon 2023 semifinals, suffering a humiliating loss. Alcaraz outplayed Medvedev while on the Centre Court and won in straight sets. Medvedev has stated that he would not watch the title match, which will take place in the last set on Sunday, and see Alcaraz taking versus Novak Djokovic in the 2023 event final.
Daniil Medvedev commented by saying that “It’s a very great match. I’m not gonna lie, it’s a very great match to watch. But I’m not gonna watch bc I’m gonna be too disappointed to not be there. If I watch on tv I’ll probably digest my loss worse.” (H/T Twitter)
The Russian tennis star, who had won the US Open the year before, was open about his defeat. “I lost. I didn’t win today, so I don’t deserve to be in the final,” he conceded. The tennis player argued that seeing the final would just make him feel worse about his defeat. Despite losing, Medvedev couldn’t help but respect Alcaraz, his rival. He likened the young Spaniard to tennis’ illustrious “Big Three”—Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer—who together have won 65 Grand Slam tournaments.
He’s a really powerful player. In general, I would suggest comparing it to the Big Three, who are fantastic, won so many Grand Slams and games. He resembles them somewhat, Medvedev gushed.

Daniil Medvedev tried his best but Alcaraz proved to be too much
The third seed and US Open winner from 2021, Daniil Medvedev, has been playing outstanding grass-court tennis this past week. Alcaraz, however, has no regard for reputation, and if the Murcian man plays with this passion against Djokovic, a change in the tennis guard may finally be in the works. In order to receive the serve from Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev stepped so far behind the baseline that he was practically on Court No. 1. This showed that he certainly had a strategy.
Alcaraz took advantage of it by serving and volleying effectively as well as including his normal number of drop shots. Alcaraz, the current US Open winner who triumphed on the turf at Queen’s last month, made the opening move by taking advantage of a single break of serve. He then blasted a ferocious return to Medvedev’s feet, forcing him to float his response long.
Alcaraz, who is only 20 years old, has already won one Grand Slam championship and has held the top spot for a number of weeks. Daniil Medvedev recognized the difficulty of playing such a strong foe. You might not play as poorly against other guys, but you’ll have your opportunities, and you’ll find something to work with during the game. “You can only succeed against Carlos if you give it everything you’ve got. I wasn’t,” he stated.
For Daniil Medvedev, his time in Europe over the previous several months and this week has nevertheless been a step in the right direction for his career. The Russian, who earlier in the year identified himself as a hard-court specialist, has advanced significantly on both clay and grass courts, winning the Italian Open and now making his first Wimbledon semifinal. However, there is a ceiling, and he was helpless in the face of Alcaraz’s diverse, devastating strength and athleticism.
