Alexander Zverev delivered his first public remark after the former world No. 3 was accused of beating his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea last Friday. If a punishment order is issued against the German as sought by the Berlin prosecutor’s office, Zverev will have two weeks to appeal.
With a quick reaction at the Hamburg European Open, an ATP 500 event, Zverev rejected the accusation made by his daughter’s mother. “I completely deny the charges. “My lawyers will handle the situation,” he remarked during a news conference, according to Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA).” (H/T Twitter)
The 26-year-old then discussed the tournament in Hamburg, saying that he enjoys the city and is looking forward to seeing his local crowd support him at the ATP 500 event. “I’m most at ease in Hamburg. “I’m hoping the crowd will cheer me on loudly,” stated Alexander Zverev. Brenda Patea asserted that the claim was unrelated to money, and Zverev has repeatedly refuted all accusations. Due to the lack of publicly available information, it is unclear where the fresh claims come from.
The public prosecutor’s office in Berlin is requesting a punishment order against Zverev for allegedly causing “bodily harm” to his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea, the mother of Zverev’s daughter, according to German news source RTL on Wednesday. According to tennis news source UBITENNIS, a court ruling compelling someone to pay a required fine for breaking the law is known as a penalty order under German law.
Alexander Zverev has been previously accused by Olga Sharypova
The 26-year-old Zverev was previously accused of assaulting his former partner Olga Sharapova, which prompted the ATP to launch a thorough investigation that was finally completed in January. Prior to the 2017 U.S. Open, a former girlfriend of Alexander Zverev claimed the German tennis star attempted to strangle her with a pillow. At the time, Zverev vehemently rejected the allegation of domestic abuse. According to the ATP’s conclusions, there was “insufficient evidence to substantiate allegations of abuse.” The No. 19-ranked player in the world, Zverev, had said all along that the accusations were untrue.
He didn’t help himself after the claims when, in a postmatch interview at the 2021 US Open, he joked about snuggling with his Olympic gold medals because he wasn’t dating anybody. Zverev remarked at the time, “I don’t have a girlfriend, I don’t have anyone next to me, so the gold medal obviously sleeps next to me instead, which is very good.”
Alexander Zverev missed the ATP 500 competition last year because he was healing from an ankle injury he suffered during his match against Rafael Nadal in the French Open quarterfinals. After defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the championship match, Lorenzo Musetti went on to win the event and is this year’s third seed. When Zverev most recently competed in Hamburg, he advanced to the semifinals but fell to eventual champion Nikoloz Basilashvili.
The Georgian won in three sets despite the 26-year-old having two match points. He is presently participating in the Nordea Open after losing in the third round of Wimbledon. Tuesday’s first-round match was won by Zverev over Alex Molcan. In singles matches on the ATP Tour this year, he is 26-17.
