Carlos Alcaraz initially made it to the Wimbledon semifinals before leaving Centre Court and being involved in a spying scandal. To advance to the semifinals, the world number one defeated fellow 20-year-old Holger Rune in straight sets. He then had to answer to claims that his father Carlos, a regular in his group, had videotaped Novak Djokovic, the seven-time winner he is scheduled to face in the final, while the Serbian trained at Wimbledon’s Aorangi Park.
To which Alcarze responded with “Oh, I guess it’s true. Tennis is one of his favorite sports. He doesn’t only watch my games, either. I believe he enters the club around 11 am and leaves at 10 night, seeing all the practices and matches. It’s possible to observe Djokovic in person, thus it’s undoubtedly accurate that he has recorded the sessions.” When questioned about whether having access to the video would provide him a competitive edge, Carlos Alcaraz responded, “I don’t think so.”
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Rune 7-6 (3) 6-4 6-4 without the use of any inside knowledge. Having grown up competing against one another, the Spaniard and sixth seed Rune partnered up for a doubles competition when they were 14 years old. They met in a Wimbledon quarterfinal on Wednesday, becoming the first men under 21 to do it in the open era.
Rune, who is older, and the other player have only six days between them, and when they entered a first-set tie-break, there was essentially nothing to divide them. Carlos Alcaraz outshot Rune 13 to 12, both players committed 12 unforced errors, and both players scored a total of 38 points. Both players had double-failed once before, but Rune chose the worst moment to add to that total, giving Alcaraz the upper hand in the tie-break, which he eventually won with a magnificent backhand return.
Despite the controversy, Carlos Alcaraz is looking sharp
It was Rune’s prospects of winning the championship that was fading as England Cricket captain Ben Stokes watched from the stands. The exhausted Dane received a warning for a timing infraction and was then defeated 3-2 in the third. Even though Rune was able to preserve a match point on his own serve, Alcaraz ultimately prevailed in two hours and 20 minutes.
Alcaraz said, “At Wimbledon, we once again competed. It’s going to be difficult. But for the time being, I’m going to savor it. A semi-final is not a game you play every year.” In the last two sets, Rune appeared agitated and admitted he wasn’t feeling his best.
He added that “This morning I didn’t feel very great. But once more, it’s typical. You don’t always feel fantastic when you wake up, he claimed. Yes, I had to make every effort to feel better in time for the game, but I didn’t have the same amount of energy as I usually have.”
Carlos Alcaraz has advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals where he will play Daniil Medvedev, whom the Spaniard compared to an “octopus.” He responded, “Well, he’s truly a complete player. He’s an octopus, I’m going to say, Rublev stated it a few times. Any ball is caught by him. It is incredible. He is a fantastic athlete. I believe that everything. He is good at practically everything.”
